École les Aiglons

Squamish

École les Aiglons is located in the Sea to Sky corridor, north of Howe Sound. École les Aiglons has offered public francophone education in Squamish since 1996.

The school offers kindergarten to grade 7 education. When parents choose to enrol their child at École les Aiglons, they recognize that they have a responsibility to promote the use of French in their child’s life, both at school and in the community.

The CSF and the Fédération des parents francophones’ claim before the Supreme Court of British Columbia:

Obtain a new kindergarten to grade 12 school on a site large enough to allow for future enrolment growth.

Court’s decision:

According to the judge, francophone parents in Squamish have the right to a homogeneous school for their children with elementary facilities that are “proportionate” to those of the majority schools. This right is not currently being respected in Squamish.

According to the judge, francophone parents in Squamish have the right to have their children educated in French in Squamish at the secondary level, and to have access to the core facilities that are necessary for offering secondary education. This right is not currently being respected in Squamish.

The implementation of section 23 of the Charter in Squamish will be supported by the order requiring the provincial government to establish a separate long-term funding envelope for the CSF’s capital projects, by the order requiring the provincial government to help the CSF acquire sites to meet the CSF’s needs, and by the order requiring the provincial government to fund the CSF’s leases where a program is offered in leased space. The implementation of section 23 in Squamish may also be aided by the order for damages regarding the decade-long freeze of funding for the CSF’s transportation budget.

The CSF and the Fédération des parents francophones will ask that that the Court of Appeal recognize that the francophone community in Squamish has an immediate right to a homogeneous kindergarten to grade 12 school that is substantively equivalent (and not solely “proportionate”) to the competing English-language schools.

Current project

The CSF has expressed its interest in purchasing property in a new development in Squamish. The CSF is waiting for the municipality of Squamish to approve the development. If the real estate project goes ahead, the CSF will have priority for the site that has already been identified.
