SUPREME COURT OF CANADA ANNOUNCES THAT IT WILL HEAR THE APPEAL ON FRENCH-LANGUAGE EDUCATION IN BRITISH COLUMBIA ON SEPTEMBER 26, 2019
On September 26, the Supreme Court of Canada will hear the appeal on the decision of the Supreme Court of British Columbia on French-language education.
An application for leave to appeal was filed with that Court on October 1, 2018 by the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique (CSF), the Fédération des parents francophones de Colombie-Britannique and co-appellant parents.
This will be the first time the highest court in the land will sit outside Ottawa. The judges will travel to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where they will hear this and another appeal. The Supreme Court explained that it was taking this initiative as part of its commitment to access to justice, and that this visit would give it an opportunity to meet with citizens.
The audience will last for less than one day. The Supreme Court judges will subsequently hand down their decision.
